Mathematical Recreations; February 1999; Scientific American Magazine; by Stewart; 2 Page(s)

The art of origami, or paper folding, has many mathematical aspects. This month I want to focus on a curious circle of ideas connecting paper folding, tiling patterns and engineering.

This topic was brought to my attention by engineer Tibor Tarnai of the Technical University of Budapest in his article "Folding of Uniform Plane Tessellations" in the conference proceedings Origami Science & Art, edited by Koryo Miura et al. (Otsu, Shiga, Japan, 1994).
